Out and About

Table football

Our fourth table football tournament took place on 4 October with nineteen teams competing for the trophy. Hot favourites to take the trophy for a third time were Steve Twigger and Lynne Cook from LDP Luckmans under their new team name “Going for the Hat-Trick”. Although they did make it into the final to play Harminder Judge and Marc Blake from Wright Hassall LLP, after an intense four minute final “Wright Hassall Cosmos” claimed victory with a 6-3 win. As usual there was a prize for the most obscure/retro football shirt. There was an array of weird and wonderful shirts being sported and the winner was Matt Cannan from Button Legal LLP and his 1980’s Boca Juniors Maradona replica shirt.

If you would like to enter a team into this fun and informal event look out for details of the Spring 2012 tournament in our February newsletter.

Cheese and Wine

As part of an Olympic themed event to celebrate a great sporting event coming to Coventry and our sponsorship of Olympic hopeful Katrina Wootton, the cheese and wine party brought together a selection of cheeses and wines that have won gold, silver or bronze awards. The evening saw a prize draw take place for those who spotted the smiley face on their invitation and the lucky winners were:

1. Gold – Paul Belfield – Handelsbanken
2. Silver – Sarah Flint – Burgis and Bullock
3. Bronze – Peter Barnes – Handelsbanken

Our guests were invited to test their taste buds in a Wine Tasting Challenge to find out if they could taste the difference between a gold, silver and bronze red and white award winning wines and guess the country the wines came from. Congratulations to John Mahon from Mahon and Co who correctly guessed both the red and white order and also the correct country for the red wine and to Peter Holt from D and P Holt coming a close second in the white wine category. The wines came from New Zealand proving they are just as good in the vineyards as they are on the rugby pitch. For guests not wishing to participate in the wine challenge there was a delicious selection of Great British award winning cheeses to enjoy.

Racquets Club

Is there anyone out there who would like to break free from the shackles of their desk and join an informal and friendly group of like minded people who enjoy racquet sports?  Why not dust off your old racquet from the garage and register your interest to join the Cranfield Racquets League starting in 2012.  We will organise everything and even hire the courts, all you will need to do is turn up and enjoy yourself!  If you are interested, please let Brett know and we will be in contact with you shortly.

Olympic Hopeful Update

Our Olympic hopeful, Katrina Wootton, discovered in July that she had an extra bone in her foot that was causing her agony whilst running and which resulted in her pulling out of the final at the Birmingham Championships. She has undergone a rigorous exercise regime to strengthen and stabilise her right foot and after four months of intensive rehab, training is progressing well and Katrina is now running an average of 50 miles per week. We were delighted Katrina was able to join us for our cheese and wine evening. To follow Katrina’s progress towards 2012 read her blog –
