Cranfield Chooses Charity
Published June 2015
At Cranfield we are fully committed to supporting the local community in which we work by ensuring our success as a business allows us to help others. This year Cranfield has chosen to support Molly Olly’s Wishes, a Warwickshire based charity which launched in 2011.
The charity was set up by Tim Ollerenshaw and his family after their daughter, Molly, passed away following a five year battle with a rare type of kidney cancer, when she was just eight years old. The aim of Molly Olly’s Wishes is to support children with cancer related terminal or life threatening illnesses throughout the Midlands and the UK, as well as to assist their families during these difficult times.
One of the ways in which the charity assists children is with Olly The Brave. Olly is a very special cuddly toy that helps children understand the treatment they will or are receiving and some of the side effects such as the loss of their hair. Developed by the charity, along with play specialists and medical professionals, Olly was officially launched in June 2014 and gives the children not only a toy they can connect with but one they can relate to. Olly comes with a special bag containing a book called “Olly The Brave and The Wigglys” which helps explain to the children the need for some of the medical procedures.
As well as also making one-off donations to children's hospitals or medical establishments the charity also grants individual wishes to children. This could be an experience or a special gift and you can read all about the positive impact this can make on the charity’s website. Funds raised also provide much needed medical equipment and support that cannot be provided by the NHS or its supporting bodies.
Cranfield chose Molly Olly’s Wishes as our charity for the year because of the amazing work they do across the UK. It is hard for young children suffering from terminal and life threatening illnesses to understand what is happening to them or why they are having to go through numerous difficult and uncomfortable hospital visits. Olly The Brave can help families answer many questions their children may ask, as well as provide some much needed comfort and support. The charity also recognises the impact a diagnosis can have upon the whole family unit and aims to support those families as much as possible. By raising funds for Molly Olly’s Wishes Cranfield hopes to contribute towards this great cause.
In orders to raise funds for Molly Olly’s Wishes Brett Barton, one of our directors, has chosen to take place in the Cardiff Burn which is held during October. The event consists of a gruelling 10km run, followed by 30km mountain bike orienteer, before kayaking 3km towards the finish line.
If you wish to sponsor Brett please visit his Just Giving page here.
Along with Brett’s completion of the Cardiff Burn, there will be a number of opportunities for you to help raise funds for Molly Olly’s Wishes at Cranfield events throughout the year.
